9 Chihuahuas Saved From Paterson Van By Bergen Rescue

None of the dogs had ever been to a veterinarian or were housebroken.

OAKLAND, NJ — The dogs were living in a van in Paterson. None of them were housebroken, and they all had overgrown nails and dental issues.

The dogs were rescued by the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge (RBAR) after getting a call from Paterson Animal Control.

The dogs' owner had been breeding them and was evicted from their home. They moved into the van, but were forced to give them up to Paterson Animal Control, which called RBAR.

"All are nervous and learning to trust people," said Megan Brinster, RBAR's executive director.

Seven of the dogs are at RBAR's shelter. Another partner rescue took in the other two.

RBAR's dogs need a significant amount of medical care, including spay and neuter surgeries, teeth extractions, vaccines, deworming, and blood work.

"These are the daunting days, when we are overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the work ahead of us," Brinster "But, all the sweat and tears are worth it as we prepare these deserving dogs to face the beautiful journey from rescue to their forever homes."

RBAR, a nonprofit, is accepting donations to help pay for the cost of caring for the dogs.
