Mayor's Vote Appoints New Oakland Police Sergeant

Oakland Police Department Patrolman Michael O'Neil was promoted to the rank of sergeant on Wednesday evening.

Michael O’Neil was promoted to the rank of Sergeant for the Oakland Police Department when the Mayor cast the deciding vote at the Borough’s last Mayor and Council meeting.

“O’Neil is certainly the right candidate for the job. He is a 10-year veteran and is well versed in all the knowledge he needs to move up into the position of sergeant,” said Oakland Police Chief Edward Kasper. “I recommended him based on his prior history, experience and professional conduct since he has been here. I know he is going to do a great job.”

About a dozen members of the Oakland Police Department were on hand to congratulate O’Neil on his promotion. His father was also in attendance to pin his new Sergeant’s badge to his chest.

“We were shy at the position of Sergeant,” said Councilman Timothy Jensen. “He has been acting as Sergeant and his pay was measured with what he was doing. By giving him the promotion we were recognizing that he deserved what he was getting. I think it's a good thing."
