Oakland Eighth Grade Student Dies
Michael Altana, an eighth grade student at Valley Middle School, died following a brain aneurysm over the weekend.
Michael Altana, an eighth grade student at Valley Middle School, died Sunday evening from a brain aneurysm.
Teachers and students were informed of the death at the start of the school day Monday. Guidance counselors, psychologists and social workers were available for counseling students and staff.
The NJASK testing session scheduled for Monday was moved to Friday. Testing scheduled for Tuesday through Thursday will remain as scheduled.

“The entire school community joins in extending our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Altana family,” said Oakland School Superintendent Jeffrey Feifer. “Thank you for your help and understanding. Please be assured that we are doing everything possible to help our students and staff through this very difficult and emotional time. Let’s all give our kids a big hug today.”
Franklin Lakes Superintendent Frank Romano has offered any services related to counseling or grieving that Franklin Lakes can provide to Oakland.

“Our School Counseling and Special Services personnel are prepared to attend to any issues that may arise among our students. I have extended our services to Oakland should they need additional support through this tragic time. Let the Altana family remain in our thoughts and prayers,” Romano said Monday.
