Polls will be open Tuesday in the Democratic and Republican primaries for the special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant with the passing in June of longtime Sen. Frank Lautenberg.
Recent polls show Newark Mayor Cory Booker with at least a 40-point lead over his competitors on the Democratic side: Congressmen Rush Holt and Frank Pallone and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver.
On the Republican ballot, only two candidates are vying to take on likely nominee Booker: Steve Lonegan and Alieta Eck. Lonegan, a former mayor of Bogota, is heading into voting with a 60-point lead in recent polls.
