Want to Become an Oakland Rec Coach?

Free safety class offered this month one of three steps to volunteering.

There are only three simple steps to become a coach for any of the Oakland recreation programs, according to the Recreation Commission website.

The first step is to enlist in the Rutgers Safety Program, which is offered free for Oakland residents. The course, a three-hour orientation on safety in youth sports, will be offered for free to Oakland residents at the Senior Center Aug. 23 at 6:30 p.m.

The next step is a background check, and an application can be found on the Recreation Commission’s website. Fingerprinting for the background check can be done at the Oakland Police Department, and the recreation will reimburse the costs.

Once those steps are completed, prospective coaches are only a 45-minute online seminar away from volunteering to take up the lead on one of Oakland’s rec teams.

Oakland recreation offers soccer, football, baseball, softball, wrestling, basketball, cheerleading, lacrosse, roller hockey, tennis and golf.
