Where to Beat the Heat in Oakland
With temperatures to remain high through the weekend, check out and share some ideas of places to cool down around town.

With heat advisories in effect this week and National Weather Service forecasts showing temperatures in the 90s through Sunday, residents might find themselves trapped within the safety of a nearby air conditioner.
The Weather Service warns that during the high temperatures, outdoor activity and exposure to the hot summer sun should be limited, and that at least part of the day should be spent hydrating in the air-conditioned indoors.
But for Oakland residents looking to venture out of the house this weekend and beyond, here are some place in and around the borough where you can go to keep cool:
- The Crystal Lake Beach Club is open weekends through the summer from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Membership is required, but residents and non-residents can apply for full or temporary memberships at the club's website.
- If you're looking to swim just for the day, other lakes in the area offer day-passes to non-residents. Crestwood Lake in Allendale offers entrance for $10, and Shephard Lake in Ringwood does the same for $5.
- Oakland doesn't have any theaters to enjoy a movie in the full-blast A/C, but the nearby Bow Tie Wayne Preakness Cinemas is showing Despicable Me 2, Grown Ups 2, Turbo, and Monsters University.
- And if you're looking for a free place to cool down, the Oakland Library opens every morning at 10 a.m. You can relax there until 8 p.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, or try to schedule an excursion around one of their special programming for adults and children.
