Annual Bike Auction Set for July 23 at New Location

The Ocean City event moves to the Shelter Road Recycling Center.

The City of Ocean City will hold its annual Bicycle Auction 10 a.m. to noon Monday, July 23. The event moves this year to the Shelter Road Recycling Center at 1 Shelter Road (off Tennessee Avenue, which intersects Bay Avenue near 23rd Street).

The auction allows anybody to bid on bicycles that have been deemed by the Ocean City Police Department to be abandoned or unclaimed. It offers an opportunity to buy bikes at low cost.

A record 210 people registered to bid at 2011's auction, and the city sold 116 bicycles, bringing in about $5,000. Successful bids ranged from $1 to $340 (the highest bid was for a tandem bicycle).

Before 2011, the city held the auctions twice a year. The city decided to consolidate to one for 2011 to save money on staffing costs. Last year's event was held at 45th Street and Bay Avenue.

Registration for this year's event begins at 9 a.m. A driver's license, passport or Valid ID is required to register.
