Dead Dolphin Washes Ashore in Ocean City

The carcass will be tested to see if it contains the same virus that killed more than 230 dolphins this summer.

A decomposed dolphin washed up on the beach at 39th Street on Wednesday (Nov. 6) in Ocean City.

Sheila Dean of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine said the condition of the carcass made it too hard to tell immediately if it was part of a trend of more than 230 dolphin deaths this year on beaches from New Jersey to Virginia.

She said samples were taken for testing. Scientists have found the same naturally occurring virus in many of the dead dolphins this summer.

Dolphins are found seasonally in New Jersey waters, and usually leave by September, Dean said.
