NJ's Coldest Day In Years: Frigid Temps To Hit Garden State

Tuesday is expected to be the coldest day in New Jersey in nearly three years with single-digit wind chills sweeping most of the state.

NEW JERSEY — Tuesday is expected to be the coldest day in New Jersey in nearly three years with single-digit wind chills sweeping most of the state, forecasters said.

Temperatures are expected to reach the high teens and 20s, but brisk northwest winds will make it feel about 10 to 15 degrees colder than the actual air temperature, according to the National Weather Service.

Daytime temperatures are likely to be the coldest since Feb. 1, 2019 and should be about 15 to 20 degrees below normal for Jan. 11 as Arctic air sweeps in from central Canada, the agency said.

Temperatures may feel even colder due to wind chills traveling up to 25 mph on Monday, with temperatures falling to single digits and below zero in some areas.

The arctic cold front could also pose dangerous conditions through Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service said people should limit prolonged time spent outdoors and ensure that pets are kept inside. The cold temperatures could potentially freeze improperly insulated pipes.

“If you need to be outside, be prepared for the wind and cold and dress in layers and wear a hat, heavy coat, as well as gloves or mittens,” the weather service said in a special weather statement. “Frostbite can occur in a short amount of time, so dress in layers and make sure all exposed skin is protected.”

With no precipitation in the forecast, icy conditions are not expected in New Jersey as temperatures plummet this week.

Temperatures on Wednesday are expected to climb into the mid 30s to the low 40s, but with brisk wind gusts as high as 30 mph.

Thursday will be slightly warmer with highs in the low-to-mid 40s and calm winds.
