'Hands Across the Sand' on Saturday

The event at noon Aug. 4 is a show of solidarity for renewable energy.

The New Jersey Sierra Club and local supporters are organizing a show of solidarity for promoting renewable energy.

The group is inviting everybody to join hands at noon Saturday, Aug. 4, on the beach at as part of the worldwide "" event. Simultaneous gatherings will be held on beaches throughout the world on Saturday.

"We are joining hands because we love the Jersey Shore and our ocean," the local Sierra Club writes in a news release. "We are joining hands for renewable energy. We are joining hands to say enough is enough to shore offshore drilling. We are joining hands to end our dependence on the dirty fuels that foul our air, water and food.We are joining hands in solidarity with the people of the Gulf (of Mexico) who still have not seen justice. We are joining hands because WE can make a difference."

Event organizers are asking participants to use the park entrance at 59th Street and Central Avenue, following the sand road and going right at the beach. Beach tags are not required in the park.
