Lower Township Man Arrested For Holding Cashier Hostage: Police

A Lower Township man has been charged with kidnapping after he held a Tractor Supply cashier hostage on Sunday, police said.

RIO GRANDE, NJ — A Lower Township man has been charged with kidnapping after he held a Tractor Supply cashier hostage on Sunday, police said.

At 12:15 p.m., Middle Township police responded to Tractor Supply in the Rio Grande section of the township for a report of a man holding a woman hostage, police said.

Officers made contact with Clifford Kellogg, 34, of Erma, who was detained by retired North Wildwood Deputy Chief Kevin Tolan, police said. Kellogg began to resist when he was placed under arrest, but officers were able to take him into custody.

Two officers received minor injuries while placing Kellogg under arrest.

An investigation found the victim, 25, of Dennis Township, was ringing customers up at the cash register when Kellogg entered the cashier vestibule and grabbed her around the neck with his arm, police said. Kellogg then dragged her from the vestibule to the front of the store. She was able to break free just before officers arrived.

Kellogg was charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and aggravated assault against law enforcement.

Kellogg was taken to the Cape May County Correctional Facility.
