OCEAN CITY, NJ — Handmade wreaths were placed on more than 1,400 veterans' graves at the Gerald M. Thornton Veterans Cemetery of Cape May County on Dec. 13 thanks to the Colony Club of Ocean City. It was their sixth consecutive year participating in Wreaths Across America.

Each December, the Wreaths Across America Organization supports local groups in remembering and honoring fallen veterans. The wreath- laying ceremonies are held at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as more than 4,000 additional locations throughout the United States and at U.S. veterans’ cemeteries on foreign soil.

“Our members, in partnership with the Exchange Club of Ocean City, made donations to sponsor the red ribbon trimmed evergreen wreaths and become part of the local sponsorship in Cape May County,” said Cathy Solarski, Co-Chair of the Colony Club’s Wreaths Across America Committee.

After a short, informal memorial service, the Colony Club members, their friends, and families joined over 50 additional volunteers to fan out and place the wreaths on more than 1,400 interred veterans’ graves.

The wreaths are hand-crafted of balsam vines and hand-tied with velvet bows at the Wreaths Across America headquarters in Columbia Falls, Maine and then shipped to each ceremony location nationwide.
