Missing Swimmer At Jersey Shore Pulled From Surf, Hospitalized

A swimmer who went missing under the water at an unguarded beach was pulled from the water and hospitalized Monday, authorities said.

STRATHMERE, NJ - A swimmer who went missing under the water at an unguarded beach at the Jersey Shore Monday was pulled from the water and hospitalized, authorities said.

The swimmer was initially reported as being in distress alongside one other swimmer at Strathmere Beach in Upper Township near Taylor Avenue, officials said.

Taylor Avenue is located near the border of Upper Township and Sea Isle City and is around one mile away from any guarded beach, officials said.

At the scene, witnesses told first responders that only one of the two swimmers resurfaced; one of the distressed swimmers had been brought to shore by a good Samaritan, while the other remained missing.

Shortly thereafter, lifeguards and Strathmere firefighters formed a search chain and searched the area, officials said. Paddle boards and jet skis from Upper Township and Ocean City crews were added to the search, as well as additional resources from the Ocean City Beach Patrol and the Sea Isle City Beach Patrol.

The United States Coast Guard and NJ Marine Police also assisted in the incident.

The second swimmer was found and brought to shore at around 12:30 p.m., officials said. The swimmer was provided CPR and was transported by an Ocean City ambulance to a local hospital.

The New Jersey State Police are investigating the incident.

An update on the swimmer's condition was not immediately available Tuesday.

Several rip tide warnings were in effect around the shore on Sunday and Monday, according to the National Weather Service Mount Holly station.

Multiple rescues were reported at an array of Jersey Shore beaches over the long weekend, including an instance of eight distressed swimmers pulled from the ocean off the coast of a Belmar Sunday evening.

In Seaside Park, there were "multiple" swimmers in distress after lifeguards were no longer on duty, according to an Instagram reel posted by the borough.

A 24-year-old swimmer remains missing near Seaside Heights beach; he was one of six swimmers found in distress near the Stockton Avenue beach around 6:30 p.m., per NJ.com.
