Ocean City Blaze Near Beach Quickly Extinguished

Firefighters used special equipment to control the fire.

No one was injured when a city dump truck caught on fire near the beach Wednesday morning on Fifth Street, an Ocean City spokesman said.

An Ocean City Public Works Department employee was operating a dump truck carrying sand to an eroded section of beach when the vehicle caught on fire at 7:20 a.m. The employee was not injured, spokesman Douglas Bergen said.

Firefighters used a truck equipped to travel the boardwalk to extinguish the blaze and were able to prevent any debris from entering the ocean, he said

The Ocean City Police Department assisted in crowd control on the boardwalk.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire. The Public Works Department will remove the vehicle from the beach when the investigation is complete, Bergen said.
