Ocean City School Board President Elected VP Of County Board

OCEAN CITY, NJ — The Ocean City Board of Education president will also be serving in a higher role, just after being re-elected locally.

Kevin Barnes, an Ocean City native, was elected vice president of the Cape May County School Boards Association. Barnes will serve a two-year term, following his previous CCSBA role of vice president of legislation.

As the CCSBA vice president, Barnes’ responsibilities include assisting the president, helping the association set strategic direction, collaborating with constituent school boards to promote effective governance, and advocating for policies at the state and local levels that benefit education across Cape May County.

“I love the opportunity to collaborate with others at the county and state levels,” Barnes said. “As a result of my leadership role, I have gained access to experienced, effective board members all throughout the state. This has enhanced my ability to more effectively serve on the Ocean City Board of Education.”

Outside of his school board role, Barnes is an attorney who has practiced in Ocean City for more than 20 years, and an adjunct professor, teaching business law at Atlantic Cape Community College and economics at Camden County College. An Ocean City High School graduate, Barnes earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Widener University, a law degree from Widener’s Delaware Law School, and a Master of Laws in taxation from the Temple University Beasley School of Law.

He was re-elected to his second term on the Ocean City Board of Education this month.

“These responsibilities enhance my ability to effectively advocate for the Ocean City School District and thus empower our children,” Barnes said of his CCSBA involvement. “I believe all local board members should participate in the opportunities made available through the county and state school board associations to truly support our children.”

Barnes said he pursued leadership in the CCSBA to enhance the statewide exposure of the Ocean City School District and its achievements. He also aimed to amplify the district’s voice in public education.

The CCSBA, made up of all 19 school districts in Cape May County, aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of local board of education members.
