Ocean City Wins 19th Straight High School Surfing Title

The National Scholastic Surfing Association Northeast Championship went off six months late, but the result was the same: Ocean City High School captured the title for the 19th consecutive year on Sunday at First Street Beach.

The annual championship for high school teams in the region had originally been scheduled for Oct. 28 in Seaside Heights, but at that time, Hurricane Sandy was a day away from making a direct hit on the Jersey Shore.

The postponed event moved to Ocean City, where the home team captured the team title with 135 points on Sunday, April 14. Manasquan High School was second with 103 points, and St. Augustine Prepatory School (Buena Vista Township) was third with 101 points.

Conflicts with other spring sports and activities kept the competition from being held on Saturday, when the surf was much bigger. But a light offshore wind groomed some clean hip- to chest-high sets to make the contest viable.

The annual event among draws high schools from New Jersey and New York. Surfers compete in men's, women's and longboard divisions. Ocean City fielded multiple six-surfer teams under coach Mark Miedama.
