Rip Currents, Flooding Likely This Week In Ocean City: NWS

An approaching supermoon and impacts of the distant Hurricane Franklin is likely to result in some rough surf and flooding in Ocean City.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — Minor flooding and rip currents are likely this week in Ocean City thanks to the distant Hurricane Franklin and approaching full moon.

Ocean City, Strathmere and other nearby coastal areas are under a coastal flood advisory Tuesday from 6 p.m. to midnight, which is likely to be extended through Wednesday and Thursday evenings, according to the Ocean City Office of Emergency Management.

"An approaching full moon, easterly winds and rain showers could combine to create tidal flooding in the 'minor' category on Tuesday night," the OEM said.

The NWS predicts a water level of 5.7 feet on the mean low water scale (MLW). By comparison, the water level reached 5.42 feet in Ocean City on Monday evening. The typical high tide in Ocean City is between three and five feet.

"For your safety and the protection of your vehicle and neighboring properties, never attempt to drive through flood waters, and do not drive around barricades," the OEM said.
