NEW JERSEY — Parts of South Jersey could see its first snow of the season on Wednesday before temperatures reach possible record-setting highs this weekend, forecasters say.

The best chance of very light snow on Wednesday is in far South Jersey, though temperatures may be cold enough in the northwestern part of the state to get some light snow or rain in the afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Motorists and pedestrians may encounter slippery spots on their travels during the evening commute.

Most of Wednesday will be a cloudy day with highs in the low 40s before temperatures fall into the upper 20s overnight.

The coldest air of the season will unfold across the region into Wednesday night before a warm air mass spreads over the region Saturday, bringing temperatures pushing toward the low 70s.

“A warming trend sets up for the next couple of weeks with above normal temps. No real chances for significant snow during this time,” the weather service said.

Temperatures on Saturday are expected to climb into the upper 60s, reaching record highs for Dec. 11, the National Weather Service said. Temperatures in Newark could reach a record 68, according to AccuWeather.

Wednesday: A slight chance of light snow before noon. Cloudy, with a high near 41. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Wednesday Night: Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 29. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph.

Thursday: Increasing clouds, with a high near 42. Wind chill values between 20 and 30. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. Light south wind.

Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 50. Southwest wind 3 to 6 mph.

Friday Night: Showers likely, mainly after 1 a.m. Cloudy, with a low around 42. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Saturday: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 65. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Saturday Night: Showers likely, mainly before 1 a.m. Cloudy, with a low around 40. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 47.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 35.
