$49K Fine For Morris Contractor In Newark Airport Hangar Collapse

OSHA says company deviated from demolition plan, creating unsafe environment.

A Montville-based construction company has been fined $49,000 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for violations made while demolishing an airport hanger in 2015.

The citation was issued to Catanzaro & Sons Enterprise, which was doing business as CATCO Demolition Services at Newark Liberty International Airport’s United Airlines Hangar No. 14 in September 2015, OSHA said.

An OSHA investigation determined the hangar’s collapse during demolition was because CATCO deviated from an approved demolition plan and made unapproved cuts to several I-beams, weakening the structural members of the hangar as employees worked inside the hangar.

“By not following the approved demolition plan, CATCO Demolition Services left its employees vulnerable to unnecessary risk,” said Kris Hoffman, director of OSHA’s Parsippany Office. “Employers must provide employees with a safe working environment; anything less than that is unacceptable.”
