Student In Critical Condition After Medical Emergency At Parsippany School

Counseling available to students, staff Thursday.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. – Students at Central Middle School were placed on a soft lockdown Thursday morning when a fellow classmate had a medical emergency, school officials said.

“Today at approximately 10:57 a.m. a student at Central Middle School had a medical emergency,” the district said in a statement. “He was attended to by staff and medical personnel and has been transported to a local hospital.”

Parsippany police released more information just after 3 p.m. Thursday and said dispatchers received a call reporting a student had collapsed and was unresponsive at the school.

Dispatchers were told CPR was in progress and was continued when police and EMS responded to the scene, police said.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victim was participating in gym class when asked to be excused and use the bathroom, police said. A short time later other students who entered the bathroom alerted the gym teacher and said something may be wrong with the person in the stall, police said.

The victim was taken to Morristown Medical Center with police escort and is currently in critical condition.

The district went on to say the student’s parents have been notified and the reason for the soft lockdown was for medical emergency personnel to have uninterrupted access to the building.

The school building is also providing counseling services to staff and students who witness the medical emergency, the district said.
