Parents, Kids Invited to Countywide Substance Abuse Forum

Three-hour event will tackle addiction with best-selling author to serve as guest speaker.

Substance abuse has become an epidemic in Morris County, and a forum to deal with addiction is now slated for Nov. 4.

The 2015 Countywide Prevention Forum will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 4 free of charge at the Morris Museum in Morris Township, sponsored by the Community Coalition for a Safe and Healthy Morris and the Morris County Department of Human Services.

The purpose of the forum is to discuss with parents, professionals, and community members the continuing substance abuse epidemic in the county and region.

The featured guest speaker is best-selling author David Sheff, who has written two books on the topic after his son battle addiction.

“The main focus of this conference will be to present addiction as a disease, not a moral failing. It’s preventable and treatable, just as with a disease such as diabetes,’’ said Beth Jacobson, Addictions Services Administrator for the Morris County Department of Human Services. “We will bring together parents, youth, professionals and community leaders to address the public health crisis of addiction in our community.
