Residents Give Back To Parsippany To Honor Of Diwali
A goodwill food drive was part of the Hindu Festival of Light.

PARSIPPANY, NJ - Last month, Parsippany residents from Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, Sewa International, and Sanskriti of New Jersey took part in a food drive for Sewa Diwali, a goodwill initiative to celebrate Diwali – the Hindu Festival of Light – through local service.
Over 26,000 pounds have been donated to food pantries, and they’re hoping to continue the donations as long as possible.
“This is a one-month program, so the plan is collect the food, and give it to the local food pantries,” said Bala Samaga. “We want to be an integral part of the Township and the community helping residents.”

Over 140 organizations in 26 states are participating in food drives like this for Sewa Diwali. The program began in New Jersey in 2018. Last year the group donated over 53,000 pounds of food, and are hoping to double that total this year, especially because the demand is so great.
“Because of COVID-19 and food insecurity, we’ve been able to appeal to our members even more this year for donations,” said Yogi Gupta. “We’re seeing big donations with little hesitation. There’s no shortage of support for the community.”

Gupta noted that Sewa means service and Diwali is the light festival.
"What we’re saying when we are celebrating our happiness in our home and with our families, it is a time to share the happiness with others," Gupta said. "We have to do this service on the occasion of Diwali."
