Boro Schools Join International Walk to School Day on Wednesday

Nellie Bennett and Ocean Road each participate in their own way

Nellie Bennett and Ocean Road elementary schools in Point Borough are participating in International Walk to School Day on Wednesday.

International Walk to School Day is when schools encourage students to walk or bike to school if possible, or, when not possible, to use school buses rather than being driven by parents.

The idea is to encourage students to exercise, with the hope that will lead to more physical activity afterwards, and to help the environment by cutting down on emissions.

Ocean Road, continuing a longtime tradition, will conduct a walk-a-thon fundraiser run by the PTO on Walk to School Day. Each year a different charity is picked. This year’s beneficiary is Ocean of Love for Children with Cancer, based in Toms River.

Nellie Bennett runs a contest each year leading up to Walk to School Day giving students the opportunity to win a special VIP escort on their walk.

Prior to Walk to School day, the gym teachers all wear pedometers throughout the day to record their steps.

The students try to guess the number of steps taken and the five students that guess closest will be escorted on their walk by Principal James Karaba, Assistant Principal Derek Hulse, Kindergarten Teacher Charles Nied, and gym teachers Greg Akins and Timothy Jaworovich and their student teacher Greg Moberg.
