The best thing residents can do to protect their health is to take the same preventive measures that help avoid catching a cold and spreading germs: Wash your hands often, cover coughs and sneezes and stay home if you're sick, Michigan said.

Eat well, get plenty of sleep and always practice good hygiene, he said. Also, check on the elderly, and if you're exhibiting flue-like symptoms, seek medical attention.

"We all must be cognizant that there will be disinformation and rumors circulating online," Michigan said. "As this situation is evolving, we will be communicating via our respective Facebook pages. Please monitor those for the most up-to-date information."
