Point Beach Residents To Get Break On Flood Insurance Costs

Borough's rating in the National Flood Insurance Program has dropped, which is a good thing.

The cost of flood insurance for Point Pleasant Beach residents just got a little cheaper.

The borough's rating in the National Flood Insurance Program's Community Rating System has dropped to a 6, Borough Administrator Christine Riehl said recently, according to the Ocean Star.

That means an additional five percent savings on flood insurance premiums.

The NFIP's Community Rating System rates towns for mitigation of flood risk, on a scale of one to ten. The lower the number, the better.

"You have to accumulate a certain number of points to achieve the rating," she said. "For each number that you drop, it's a five percent reduction in flood insurance."

The borough stepped up flood mitigation efforts after Superstorm Sandy slammed into the Jersey Shore on Oct. 29, 2012.

The borough has set aside properties for open space preservation, stormwater management and flood plain mapping since Sandy.

"Since Sandy we went from an eight to a six," Riehl said.
