UPDATED STORY: Autopsy to be Done on Point Boro High School Senior Who Died in Point Beach

The cause of death of an 18-year-old girl who died in Point Beach is undetermined, but an autopsy will be done, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

Michael Paulhus, executive assistant county prosecutor, said an autopsy will be done on Jordan Calabrese, a senior, but he does not know when.

Paulhus said Calabrese was at a private home in Point Beach Saturday night and  was rushed by the Point Pleasant Emergency and First Aid Squad to Ocean Medical Center in Brick where she was pronounced dead sometime in the early morning hours on Sunday.

Information was not yet available on how Jordan Calabrese died. Jordan, who was a cancer survivor from her earlier teen years, had just turned 18 on Nov. 17.

Jordan had worked part-time at D. Monaco Designs, 642 Arnold Ave., Point Beach, since September 2010, shortly after the store opened in May 2010, said Danielle Monaco, store owner.

"We are heartbroken here," Monaco said on Monday afternoon. "She had a smile that lit up the room when she walked in. This is a huge loss for us."

Monaco said Jordan was working with her on Saturday, helping to set up Monaco's new store at 121 Main St., Manasquan.

"Jordan helped me set up the store, she had an eye for fashion and design," Monaco said. "She wanted to work in interior design. That's why she was so great helping me set up the second store. She did the displays. But she was great at everything she did here, sales, everything.

"She was so kind to the customers, the customers all loved her," Monaco said. "We had lunch together Saturday. She seemed fine. She looked beautiful and she was happy. She was a great girl with a great head on her shoulders.

"She talked about getting her college applications ready and seemed to be concentrating on school and work," she said.

Monaco said she didn't know if Jordan had planned to go to a party that night.

Point Borough High School students are planning to hold a candlelight vigil at 7 tonight at the Osborne Avenue Beach in Bay Head for the 18-year-old borough high school senior who died in Point Beach during the weekend.

The Show Choir will perform a song and the students will share pictures and stories in remembrance, according to preliminary information. There are no details yet on official services.

Point Beach police confirmed "an incident," involving the death, did occur in Point Beach, but that police cannot release any information because the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office is taking the lead on the investigation. That is typical protocol when there is a fatality.

In Point Borough, the school district administration and high school staff met Monday morning and have staff and counselors available for any students who need to talk, according to a prepared statement from Superintendent of Borough Schools Vincent S. Smith, that is as follows, in its entirety:

"The Point Pleasant Borough School District community is terribly saddened by the tragic loss of Point Pleasant Borough High School senior Jordan Calabrese. As we mourn this tragic loss, our thoughts and prayers are with Jordan’s family in this unimaginably difficult time.

Our attention also remains focused on the needs of our students and staff. Grief counseling services have been made available through the high school guidance department.

In addition, all high school personnel have attended a mandatory meeting regarding Jordan’s passing and are prepared to provide additional support to students as needed. We strongly encourage all students in need of assistance to reach out to a staff member or member of our counseling team.

On behalf of the entire Point Pleasant Borough School community, I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to Jordan’s family and friends. I humbly request the community join in the expression of condolences to her family and yet also respect the process of healing that must now take place."

Jordan wrote for the high school newspaper and was also a member of the Yearbook Club, Italian Club and Key Club, and also worked at D. Monaco Designs, 642 Arnold Ave., Point Beach, according to Jacquelyn Goss, a school district spokesperson.
