POINT PLEASANT BORO – Shaylynn Jones said she's come from a "dark place" to feeling she's a contestant on American Idol.

The long-time Point Pleasant Boro resident and mother of three is trying to become Inked Magazine's Cover girl, a publication that celebrates what many consider the beauty of body art and tattoos.

"It’s been amazing," Shaylynn Jones said. "I almost feel like I’m a contestant on American Idol or something with the outpouring support. I would love nothing more to show everyone you don’t need to have a million followers or be a size zero to achieve your dreams.”

Shaylynn has already made it through the first few rounds of voting, and she's maintained her group as the 1st place group winner the entire way.

She will now advance to the quarterfinals where the vote counts are reset, and the competition will get more intense.

Voting is solely up to the public and she's just had an incredible community, she said, standing behind her this whole way.

Shalynn still has a few more rounds to go but the more votes and shares on social media, the better. Jones said she just wants to make everyone proud of her.

"I’ve come so far in my journey and I just want people to look at me and say, 'Wow she did it. I can too,' " she said.

For the last two years, Jones has been on a weight-loss and health journey. She has currently lost 85 pounds and she quit smoking. She is now in the best shape of her life while inspiring and helping countless others along the way.

Last month, she decided to enter into Inked Magazine's Cover Girl Contest for 2021 at a chance to win $25,000, a cover on the magazine and possibly a new career path and journey – all the while keeping her main goal in mind: "Inspiring and proving to others you can do anything you put your mind to."

“Never in a million years did I ever think I would be where I am today, let alone entering into a contest, putting myself out there in ways," Jones said. "I never thought possible. I never believed I was good enough, or pretty enough but I’ve had such an incredible support system from friends and family pushing me and telling me I can do this."

At the same time, Jones has been a long-time caregiver to her grandmother, Olga Kleinertz, who is a longtime resident and former owner of PB Shorehouse.

Shaylynn’s grandmother has been paralyzed for the last 11 years so it was only natural that her daughter, Judy Sherwood, and granddaughter, Shaylynn, stepped up to the plate and care for her.

Jones said she was in such a dark place after she gave birth to her third child, weighing 233 pounds.

"It’s just a surreal, humbling and overwhelming experience and I’m so blessed to even have this honor and continue to inspire and tell my story along the way," she said.

You can vote once a day for free for Shaylynn and you can purchase votes for her that go directly to MusiCare foundation. MusiCares provides a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need, she said.

MusiCares' services and resources cover a wide range of financial, medical and personal emergencies, and each case is treated with integrity and confidentiality, she said.

MusiCares also focuses the resources and attention of the music industry on human service issues that directly influence the health and welfare of the music community, she said.

Shaylynn has been adamant about not wanting to win this based off purchased votes but wanting to win with free votes alone. But when she’s going up against women with millions of Instagram followers, it’s going to be tough.

The more her community stands behind her, the better the chance she has at winning Inked Magazines Cover Girl contest.
