So members of the Point Pleasant Fire Department and local officials recently teamed up to form the James "Jim" Vandemark Fund to help with expenses.
"We would like the people of Point Pleasant to respond," Mayor Robert Sabosik said at a recent Borough Council meeting. "This man is a very proud man, but he has been one of the best assets this town has and I know that we will help him in this trying time."

Vandemark said in a recent interview he is used to helping others, not vice versa.
"I am usually on the other end of this, but the support has been overwhelming," he said.
Vandemark, who never smoked, recovered from Hodgkins lymphoma 30 years ago. His recent lung cancer diagnosis came as a shock, he said.
He has already had several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and hopes his next checkups bring better news.
If you would like to donate to the fund, please make checks payable to the Jim Vandemark Fund and mail to the Point Pleasant Fire Department, 1 Memorial Drive, P.O. Box 624, Point Pleasant, NJ 08742.
