Rabies Warning in Point Beach

Raccoon tests positive and could have spread rabies

Point Beach is asking local residents, visitors and business people to report any animals that appear to be sick or aggressive, now that a raccoon with rabies has been captured in town.

Jack Neary, known locally as " the town's animal control officer, confirmed that a raccoon that was captured during the day on Long Point Lane last Friday has tested positive for rabies, said Point Beach Borough Administrator Christine Riehl in a prepared statement.

"We are asking residents and visitors to avoid all contact with any unleashed animal, and to call the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department should they observe or come into contact with any animals that appear to be sick, aggressive, or seem to be acting strangely," Riehl wrote in the statement.

"Symptoms include changes in behavior, including aggression,  agitation and excessive salivation.

"Please do not attempt to feed, trap, or take any wild animal into your home. We would also encourage adults to teach children to never approach unfamiliar dogs, cats or wildlife, even if they appear friendly," the statement continues.

"Animals that are outdoors may be exposed to rabies from other wild animals, and we suggest that residents keep their pets leashed, and inside your home, and have valid rabies vaccinations.

"The Borough of Point Pleasant Beach will continue to keep you informed of any new reports."
