Suspicious Package Left On Truck Near Point Beach Town Hall Was Not An Explosive Device, Police Say

Borough Hall, several homes and streets were evacuated on Tuesday night, police say.

In the end, the suspicious package placed in the bed of a pickup truck on Tuesday night outside Town Hall on New Jersey Avenue turned out to be nothing dangerous.

But Point Pleasant Beach police weren't taking any chances.

They set up a perimeter and evacuated Borough Hall - where a Borough Council meeting was interrupted - and several homes in the area. They closed Route 35 North between Washington and Atlantic Avenue and notified NJ Transit, which halted service in the area, according to the department's Facebook page.

The New Jersey State Police Bomb Unit responded, as well as several K9 teams from the Ocean County Sheriff's Department and the NJ Transit Police.

Authorities determined at 9:37 p.m. that the package was not an explosive device and the all clear was given.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

The Ocean County Sheriff's Department, Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, NJ State Police, the Point Pleasant, Bay Head and Mantoloking police departments also responded, along with area fire company and the state Department of Transportation.
