POINT PLEASANT BORO – It's true: There was a deer in the Point Pleasant Canal on Friday, and two videos show police tried unsuccessfully to save the animal.

The State Police initially told Patch that the deer was already out of the water and was not in any distress when they arrived.

After watching the video, the State Police confirmed that they actually did see the deer and tried to rescue the animal.

The State Police's Marine Service Unit responded to the canal after Point Pleasant Boro police received the call on Friday at 2:32 p.m.

The deer was swimming against he current, and police tried getting rope around the animal, police said.

When they actually did bring the deer onto the boat, police said, the animal was exhausted. Police tried to revive the deer, but they were unsuccessful.

A number of people reported the incident to Patch, expressing regret but also gratitude to the officers for doing everything they could.

"The three troopers on two boats worked hard to guide then assist the exhausted deer to land, one person wrote. "Thank you to the troopers for your hard work – it is appreciated!"
