Major Shift In NJ Gas Prices Expected For Labor Day Weekend

The Garden State will see holiday gas prices hit levels that haven't been seen since 2020.

The last summer holiday weekend of 2025 is just around the corner, and according to experts, gas prices are going to be lower than average for the holiday.

GasBuddy, the crowd-sourced tracker of discount prices, recently released its annual Labor Day gas price forecast, predicting that average gas prices will be the lowest in five years.

Motorists can expect more relief in the weeks ahead, as much of the nation will see the transition back to cheaper winter gasoline in mid-September.

Demand will also soon begin to fall as summer ends and motorists take fewer road trips and as temperatures start to cool off, according to GasBuddy.

“Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, and when it comes to gas prices, it’s been the cheapest summer to hit the road since the pandemic, a trend that will likely continue with the potential for the national average to fall below $3 per gallon this fall,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“We’ve seen a remarkably affordable summer to hit the road with incomes up and gas prices down, but there are some challenges that remain: hurricane season and uncertainty over trade, tariffs and Russia’s war on Ukraine. However, I remain optimistic that as cooler weather invades, gas prices too, will seasonally cool off.”

According to an AAA report, the average per-gallon price for regular dropped in NJ to $3.05, while the national average price rose to $3.20, as of Wednesday.

So, how low will the gas prices go? With the oil market too volatile, there are too many variables to make a prediction, according to the AAA.

“But if crude oil prices remain low and barring any major geopolitical events or tropical storms hitting the Gulf Coast, it’s safe to say drivers could continue to see cheaper prices at the pump as summer winds down,” the AAA said

Here are some gas stations from across NJ that are offering low prices as of Wednesday, according to GasBuddy:

  • Sunco, East Hanover, $2.71
  • Ab Trading, Wayne, 2.71
  • U.S. Gas, Fairfield, $2.72
  • Royal, Lawrenceville, $2.73
  • Lukoil, Ewing, $2.73
  • Jersey Fuel, Hazlet, $2.73
  • Costco, Edison, $2.74
