Princeton University Releases Statement about Professor's Death

Antonio Calvo, lecturer in Spanish, committed suicide this month after his university contract was not renewed

Princeton University President Shirley M. Tilghman this morning released a statement calling Calvo a "valued and beloved colleague, teacher and friend."

Her statement followed articles about Calvo's death in multiple news outlets, including the New York Times

Tilghman said Calvo's departure came out a university review which can not be disclosed without breaking confidentiality.

"An unfortunate consequence of this policy is that in the absence of the facts, untrue and misleading rumors have been swirling on campus and in the blogosphere," Tilghman wrote. "Most problematically, innocent individuals on campus have been identified and fingers pointed in a manner that is deeply unfair, hurtful and unworthy of this university community."
