Memorial Saturday Will Honor Life of Slain Soldier

Residents are asked to hang American flags in honor of Staff Sgt. Eric Christian, a Ramsey High School grad who was killed last month.

Saturday, residents and businesses in Ramsey will honor the life of a former resident who was killed while on active duty in Afghanistan last month. Mayor Chris Botta sent an alert this week to residents reminding them of the following procedures for the memorial:

On May 4, 2013, Ramsey lost one of its own, Marine Staff Sergeant Eric Christian, who was killed while serving his country in Afghanistan. Sgt. Christian, a 1993 graduate of Ramsey High School, served his country proudly and honorably through five tours of duty in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on May 22.

On Saturday, June 8, the Borough of Ramsey and Sergeant Christian’s family will honor and celebrate Sergeant Christian’s life and service to his country with a memorial procession and ceremony to follow in Veterans Park.

The procession will begin at 11:30 a.m. from the Lutheran Church on Wyckoff Avenue, and proceed down Main Street to Veterans Park. (The procession will occur rain or shine, but if there is inclement weather, the memorial ceremony will be moved indoors to the Ramsey High School Auditorium).

Please be aware of traffic congestion and street closings on Saturday morning due to the procession and the presence of military apparatus on the ground and in the air.

We encourage you to attend these events to honor Sgt Christian and his family, and also encourage you to display American flags along the procession route and at your homes on Saturday.
