Tropical Storm Andrea Relocates Ramsey Relay

The annual event is still on, and will be dedicated to Rich Lio, the retired Ramsey High School Principal who died last week.

A Tropical Storm isn’t enough to stop enthusiastic Ramsey Relayers from walking to benefit the American Cancer Society. But Andrea, which is expected to drop two to four inches of rain on the region, is going to slightly tweak the plan’s for Ramsey’s sixth annual Relay for Life, which starts at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Organizers announced Thursday night that Andrea has prompted them to move the Relay indoors, and shorten it.

“Due to impending tropical storm Andrea , we have elected to move Friday’s Relay for Life indoors,” at Ramsey High School, organizers announced. “We will not be asking participants to stay the night. Planned ceremonies and activities will take place in between the 5:30 p.m. registration and the 10:45 p.m. closing ceremony.”

And, according to the announcement, this year’s Relay will also be impacted by sad news the Ramsey community learned of last week, the passing of retired Principal Rich Lio, who helped bring the program to the borough.

“This year’s event is being dedicated to Principal Richard Lio who lost his fight with lung cancer last week,” the announcement said. “Mr. Lio became the Million Dollar Man at bank night when we surpassed a million dollars in funds raised since the event began in Ramsey six years ago. At 8 p.m. we will hold Lio’s Lap. [Participants are asked to wear] Giants, Yankees, University of Delaware or Ramsey High School apparel to honor Mr. Lio.”

Organizers say the tweaked agenda should not change the spirit of the event.

“Although this event will differ from the norm, it is our hope that we will be able to celebrate, remember, and fight back in the same manner we have in the past.”
