On February 2, 2020, James (Jim) Appio, then 51 years old and residing in Little Silver, found himself in the midst of a health emergency while accompanying his mother to receive her COVID vaccine. As he waited in the car, an unsettling feeling crept over him, signaling that something was amiss. Quickly recognizing the gravity of the situation, Jim reached out to his wife, Dandi, for assistance. Despite his best efforts, he began to experience difficulty speaking, prompting Dandi to take decisive action. Utilizing the 'find my phone' feature, she determined Jim's location and promptly contacted emergency services
Rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, he had life-saving brain surgery. Despite memory loss and rehab challenges, Jim made progress, relearning movement and speech.
The unwavering support of his rehabilitation team at Jersey Shore and later at Johnson Rehabilitation Institute at Riverview Medical Center proved to be his guiding light. Under the watchful eyes of physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist Jorge Corzo, M.D., Jim embarked on a journey to recovery. Each therapy session became a battleground where victories were hard-won, where progress was measured in small triumphs. Through perseverance and unwavering resolve, Jim defied the odds, inching ever closer to reclaiming the life he once knew. His journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of rehabilitation—a journey marked not by competition, but by resilience, by hope, and by the unwavering commitment to reclaiming a life worth living.
