New Sharrows Aim to Make Red Bank Safe for Cyclists

The identifying marks were installed Tuesday, with more expected to be added this summer.

In an effort to keep the borough’s streets safe for cyclists, Red Bank’s Public Works Deparment recently added sharrows all along Chestnut Street in support of the borough’s bicycle and pedestrian planning project.

Sharrows are, essentially, marked bike lanes. Identified by large, painted bicycle logos, they both help direct cyclists down riding lanes and alert drivers who share the same street.

The installation of the sharrows was announced by Councilman Ed Zipprich, liaison to the DPW. According to a release from the borough, there are plans to add other designated roadways to connect with Chestnut. The idea is to develop a functional bike network that will connect key areas around town.

Once the bike and pedestrian plan is formally introduced at the borough’s August Planning Board meeting – the plan exists and has been worked on for some time – more improvements will be added throughout Red Bank.
