Video: Sacrificing Cones to Save Lives

Driving under the influence is a serious problem. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly a third of all traffic-related deaths involve alcohol, nearly 11,000 in 2009 alone.

In an effort to demonstrate the dangers of drinking and driving, the set up a golf cart driving course at its recent National Night Out complete with tight turns and plenty of orange cones. To simulate drunken driving, police used "Fatal Vision" goggles, which distort the wearer's vision and are designed to portray and accurate version of driving under the influence.

The cones, unfortunately, did not make it out unscathed.

While the exercise was a good time for its participants, who struggled to keep their carts within the cone course while slowing down and even stopping at times around the curves, the lesson was not lost. Those who attempted the course agreed, driving under the influence is not a good idea.
