3 Teens Carjacked Driver At Bergen County Store: Prosecutor

Three teens were arrested for carjacking a driver early in the morning at a Bergen County convenience store, prosecutors said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Three teens were arrested last week in connection with an early morning carjacking at a Bergen County convenience store, prosecutors said.

Two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old from New York City were arrested on Wednesday after an investigation into a carjacking on April 22, 2024, in Hackensack, said the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutors say that on that date around 4:30 a.m., the Hackensack police responded to a carjacking at a convenience store on South River Street.

Police said the victim was parked at the store when a masked person approached, opened the driver’s side door, assaulted the victim, and tried to pull off their jewelry.

After a struggle, the suspect fled to a waiting black Mercedes.

The car left, then returned and parked behind the victim's car, blocking that person in, police said.

Then, several masked suspects got out surrounded and threatened the victim, then stole the person's wallet, phone, jewelry, and vehicle.

Police and county investigators determined that the Mercedes Benz had been reported stolen in New York City several hours before the carjacking.

Detectives identified the teens as suspects. They were charged with first-degree armed robbery, first-degree carjacking, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

By this past Wednesday, all three suspects were found with the assistance of the FBI and New York City Police Department.

All three are in the custody of New York State, awaiting extradition to Bergen County.
