5-Hour SWAT Standoff Ends In Arrest Of Man Who Pulled Knife At Bergen Co. Business: Cops

A man pulled a knife on a Bergen County business owner, then hid in an apartment building for five hours, drawing a SWAT team, police said.

FAIRVIEW, NJ — A SWAT Team helped capture a man who assaulted a business owner and hid in a Bergen County apartment for five hours on Friday, police said.

Oliver Checo, 38, of Cliffside Park was charged Friday with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, and several weapons charges, said the Fairview police in a statement.

Police said that around 2 p.m. Friday, police were called to Walker Street. They were told that a man dressed in black had assaulted a business owner nearby, brandished a knife, and fled to an apartment building at 257 Walker St.

Police soon found out that the suspect lived in the building, but he refused to comply with officers' orders, police said.

The Bergen County SWAT Team was contacted to help, and the apartment building was evacuated as a precautionary measure, police said.

Checo was taken into custody at 7:53 p.m, police said.

Despite reports of shots being fired, there were none, police noted. Instead, people might have heard tear gas devices being deployed, police said.
