Celebrating its sixth year of bringing high-quality art programs and events to the community, the Arts Council of Glen Rock will present an evening of three short film screenings and three short story readings by returning Glen Rock natives and lifelong friends Paul Stekler and Michael Fine on Friday, October 17.

Stekler, a Glen Rock High School Class of 1970 graduate, is a documentary filmmaker who has won Emmys, Peabodys and du-Pont Columbia awards, and a Sundance Film Festival honor for films about American history and politics. His family’s Glen Rock roots include his father, a beloved local pediatrician, and his brother, a popular veterinarian who works out of the same home-based office on Prospect Street.

Fine, a GRHS Class of 1971 alum and former director of the Rhode Island Department of Public Health, is a prolific author of three volumes of short stories, a novel, and three nonfiction books on the failures of the U.S. health care system. Dr. Fine is also a leading health care reformer, founder of Primary Care for All Americans.

The evening showcases Fine reading three short stories: “Elijah on Route 6,” “The Prisoner of Ideas,” and “The Jewish Prince of Denmark,” which will be interwoven with three of Stekler’s short films. “Molly & Ann” features his iconic Texas friends Molly Ivins and Ann Richards, “Spit Farther!” looks at the world championship watermelon seed spitting competition (featuring past champ Tito “Vodka” Beveridge) and “Inside Man: Rodney Ellis and the Art of the Possible” shows how a Texas legislator triumphed to enact historic criminal justice reform. A directed Q&A will follow.

Admission is free. The evening of short films and short stories takes place at Glen Rock Borough Hall Council Chambers, 1 Harding Plaza, Glen Rock, N.J. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the program begins at 7:00 p.m. Glen Rock Borough Hall is handicap accessible.
