Bergen Community College: Community Feedback Sought For Mural Project

PARAMUS, NJ – Gallery Bergen, the visual arts presentation space of Bergen Community College, has received a grant from Bergen County for the design and installation of a public mural on the theme of immigration and seeks the public’s input on imagery on concepts. Award-winning Newark-based artist Layqa Nuna Yawar will lead the design, execution and installation of the mural scheduled for placement this November in the Pitkin Education Center at the College’s Paramus main campus at 400 Paramus Road. Layqa’s past work includes large murals at Newark Liberty and Munich International Airports.

Gallery Bergen and Nuna Yawar will host public meetings to solicit feedback on Monday, September 22 at 5 p.m. at the Philip Ciarco Jr. Learning Center at 355 Main Street in Hackensack, rooms 102/103, and on Wednesday, September 24 at 4 p.m. at the College’s main campus Pitkin Education Center, room S-134. The community can also submit ideas and concept drawings/images here.

Nuna Yawar will present his concept for the mural during a public meeting on Wednesday, October 22 at 4 p.m. at the main campus.

Born in Ecuador, Nuan Yawar remains known for large-scale community-based murals, intricate portrait paintings and multimedia projects that feature the complex narratives of immigrant, black, indigenous and subaltern populations. He currently teaches at Rutgers University.
