Glen Rock Woman Taken For $6K In Online Scam

Someone told the woman he needed a personal assistant to handle banking transactions for him, police said.

GLEN ROCK, NJ — A borough woman is out $6,000 after she fell victim to an online job scam, police said.

A man claimed he needed a personal assistant to complete banking transactions for him. He asked the woman to get $3,000 in money orders from Walmart in Saddle Brook and gave her bank account information to deposit the money into, said Chief Dean Ackermann.

The woman was mailed a check for $3,950 to compensate her. Another check for $4,980 was sent to her, and she was asked to deposit $1,980 into a Chase Bank account and use the rest of the money to purchase more money orders, Ackermann said.

A Chase Bank teller flagged the transaction as suspected fraud when the woman tried to complete the transaction, the chief said.

Glen Rock Police detectives are reviewing the matter.
