I-80 Sign Displays Offer Of Sexual Services, Phone Number

The message urged people to call the number displayed on the sign.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Drivers on Interstate 80 recently may have done a double take when they saw that an electric sign along the highway was displaying a different kind of message.

The sign, a portable electronic message board, displayed a message for sexual services and a phone number: "For the best ----jobs, call...."

Facebook user The Chunk Life posted a video of the message, including the phone number. The video has been viewed more than 51,000 times since it went live Sunday.

"Merry Christmas New Jersey. Ha ha," the post said.

A call to the number led to a voicemail greeting of someone from United Rentals. United Rentals is a Connecticut-based international equipment rental company with 15 branches in New Jersey.

The message board was being used for a state Department of Transportation project, said Daniel Triana, a department spokesman. He said the message board had been "vandalized."

The department contacted United Rentals as soon as they were notified of the vandalism and told them to remove the message and secure all of their message boards.

"The department reiterated to the contractor that the control boxes of all portable variable message signs must be secured with a lock to prevent vandalism," Triana said.
