Man Stole Elderly Couple's Money For Personal Use, Bergen County Prosecutors Say

A Bergen County man got power of attorney over an elderly couple and took hundreds of thousands for himself, officials say.

CLOSTER, NJ — A Bergen County man got power of attorney over an elderly couple and took hundreds of thousands for himself, officials say.

Anthony Gorga, 73, of Closter has been charged with misapplication of entrusted property, said the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutors say that in May, Bergen County Adult Protective Services contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit regarding an allegation of misappropriation of funds belonging to an elderly couple.

An investigation revealed that Gorga, in his position of power of attorney, stole approximately $200,000, using the funds for himself over several years.

He was arrested Thursday in Closter and charged with second-degree misapplication of entrusted property, prosecutors said.

He was taken to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, prosecutors said.
