GLEN ROCK, NJ — A local man's toe was hewed off when a tree fell on his foot, according to authorities.

The Hamilton Avenue man's big toe on his left foot was abscised around noon Friday when he felled a small tree in his backyard, Glen Rock police chief Dean Ackermann said.

The man's shoe, with his toe inside, became lodged underneath the tree, and he was able to pull out (what was left of) his extremity from the shoe prior to police arrival, Ackermann said.

One officer provided first aid while two others pried the tree off of the ground to free the footwear containing the toe, which was then placed into a bag of ice, police said.

The victim was then taken to an area hospital for further treatment, police added.
