Midland Park Students Honor Late Teacher Matthew Sayles, a Ridgewood Native

Sayles, a 26-year-old math teacher, died from a rare form of cancer in 2011.

The family of a beloved mathematics teacher whose life ended far too young, looked on as students honored at Midland Park High School on June 5.

Sayles passed away on November 11, 2011 after a long and difficult battle with salivary duct carcinoma, a rare form of cancer. He was a 2003 graduate of .

The students at Midland Park Jr./Sr. High School, where he'd taught for four years, raised about $1,000 to purchase and install a metal bench with an inscription honoring the late math teacher's life, northjersey.com reported.

The family is forming the Matthew Sayles Foundation for Salivary Gland Cancer, and will issue scholarships to one student at MPHS and one student at RHS this year, according to the article.
