Earlier in her career, she was a classroom teacher in second and third grade, the district said.

Hughes said she’s thrilled to have the opportunity to “contribute to a district with a long-standing reputation for excellence, collaboration, and a deep commitment to student success.”

“Glen Rock is a place where families, staff, and leaders work together with a shared vision to support the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally,” she said. “I’m especially energized by the opportunity to join the Byrd School community and build on the strong, positive school culture already in place."

She describes her leadership style as transparent, student-centered, and grounded in continuous growth.

“I believe strong leadership starts with clear communication, active listening, and building trust across the school community,” she
said. “I am visible, approachable, and honest with staff, students, and families. When people feel informed and included, they are more empowered to collaborate and lead alongside me.”

Her passion for education was sparked by the impact teachers had on her own life, especially her third grade teacher, Mrs. Poiani.

“She made me feel seen, loved, and cared for, while also holding me to high expectations,” she said. “She showed me the power a teacher has to shape a child’s confidence and future.”

Ms. Hughes earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Towson University and a Master’s degree in Education Literacy with a concentration as a reading specialist from William Paterson University. She also holds a supervisor certification and completed her principal certification through NJEXCEL.

Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her family and their German Shepherd, Riggs. She’s an avid reader and loves relaxing with a good
book, especially at the beach, her favorite place to recharge.
