Not-So-Secret 'Stache: Police Officers Raising Awareness of Men's Health Issues

During the month of "Movember," members of the Ridgewood Police Department are raising money and awareness for prostate cancer

You may notice something a bit different about the Ridgewood police this month – the boys in blue are growing mustaches in an effort to raise awareness and money for men's health issues.

According to Ptl. Mike Lembo, the "Movember" move is a continuation of a community service theme from the past few months. In October the battling the impacts of cancer, and later that month the PBA supported the .

"Now it's sort of our turn," Lembo, the team captain, smiled. "There's an organization called 'Movemenber' where guys grow mustaches in November to raise awareness of men's health issues, specifically prostate cancer."

Because of the public nature of the job, it was a logical choice.

"We figured we're out in the public every day and it's a great talking point," Lembo said. "I've had people come up to me and say, 'You guys are growing mustaches?' It's getting the word out there. We've already raised over $300."

Ten officers have already signed up (mustaches are allowed within departmental grooming standards) and organizers expect a few more to join the cause, though it will need to be soon – on Nov. 1, the participants had to start clean shaven.

Quite simply, the PBA would like men to have a clean bill of health. Regular checkups need to be done, Lembo said, otherwise the situation could become dire.

"It's one of the biggest killers of men," Lembo said of prostate cancer. "A lot of guys are uncomfortable and don't know what it is. This is helping get that message out."
