Report: Famed Glen Rock Hacker Charged With Felony Pot Possession

Citing unnamed sources, Abovethelaw.com says George Hotz was charged with felony marijuana possession in Texas last week

The Glen Rock hacker who famously became the first person to "jailbreak" an iPhone has been charged with felony marijuana possession in Texas, according to a report on Abovethelaw.com

George Hotz was en route to the SXSW conference in Austin when he was arrested at a border checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, the site reported.

The site reported that Hotz has a medical marijuana license in California. Abovethelaw.com wrote:

The border agents allegedly said they would turn Hotz over to the local sheriff and he would get a citation. Not a big deal, right? But our source explains the local sheriff took the whole weight of the chocolate as the proper measure (as if the candy were made entirely of pot). Law enforcement then valued the “special” chocolate truffles at $800, instead of the $15 our source says Hotz paid for it.

The change led to the felony charge, the site reported.

Hotz, attended the Glen Rock Public Schools and Bergen Academies in Hackensack, first came to the public's attention in 2007 when he released a "jailbreak" for one of the original versions of the Apple iPhone.

The first three iterations of Apple's wildly successful smartphone had been programmed to operate exclusively on the AT&T network — Hotz's jail break of the device's software enabled users to go out of network.

Hotz, who often goes by the online handle "GeoHot," re-entered popular media again around April 2010 when he began releasing info regarding a new hack exploiting the operating system of Sony's popular video game console PS3.

In January of 2011 Sony filed suit against Hotz — the case was later settled out of court. The basic details of the settlement have been well publicized in the media and even blogged about by GeoHot on his public blog, which has been mostly quiet since the settlement.

Hotz last year, but has apparently since left the company.
